The Quartile Take

R.I.P.D. is a derivative, by-the-numbers supernatural buddy-cop comedy that borrows heavily from Men in Black in both concept and execution. The plot is predictable and formulaic, following a murdered cop seeking revenge while navigating an undead police force. The acting from Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges is passable but unremarkable, with Bridges leaning heavily into a cartoonish cowboy persona. The cinematography and visual effects are mediocre, with CGI that was considered underwhelming even at release. There is very little novelty here — the film feels like a pale imitation of superior films in the genre. The ending is uninspired and telegraphed well in advance. Across the board, the film lands squarely in below-average to average territory with no standout qualities.
