John Carter (2012)

Quartile rating: 4/10 · 1 rating

John Carter is a war-weary, former military captain who's inexplicably transported to the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars) and reluctantly becomes embroiled in an epic conflict. It's a world on the brink of collapse, and Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.

The Quartile Take

John Carter adapts Edgar Rice Burroughs' foundational planetary romance novels, giving it inherent novelty as the source material that inspired countless later sci-fi works — though ironically it feels derivative to modern eyes because so much borrowed from it. The plot has genuine ambition and scope but suffers from convoluted world-building and pacing issues that make it hard to engage with emotionally. The acting is uneven; Taylor Kitsch lacks the charisma needed to anchor the film, though supporting players like Mark Strong and Ciaran Hinds fare better. Cinematography is competent and delivers some striking Martian vistas, but the action sequences are often muddled. The ending resolves things adequately but without much emotional payoff, and the mid-credits setup for a sequel that never came feels hollow in retrospect.
