Pandas (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

In the mountains of Sichuan, China, a researcher forms a bond with Qian Qian, a panda who is about to experience nature for the first time.

The Quartile Take

Pandas is an IMAX nature documentary with stunning large-format cinematography of Sichuan's landscapes and the irresistibly endearing giant pandas. The visuals are genuinely exceptional, leveraging the IMAX format beautifully. However, the narrative is fairly formulaic for a wildlife conservation doc — the human-animal bond story follows predictable beats and offers little depth beyond surface-level charm. Acting/on-camera presence from researchers is functional at best. Novelty is limited as panda documentaries are a well-trodden genre. The ending is warm and hopeful without being particularly memorable.
