Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
Two 19th-century opportunists become serial killers so that they can maintain their profitable business supplying cadavers to an anatomist.
John Landis's dark comedy take on the real-life Edinburgh body snatchers has a lively enough premise and a solid cast (Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis) playing likable rogues, but the film never quite commits fully to either its comedic or horror potential. The plotting is episodic and uneven, the cinematography is functional period-piece work without visual distinction, and the ending feels rushed and tonally uncertain. Novelty is moderate — the subject matter is inherently interesting and the black comedy angle gives it some personality, but it doesn't fully transcend its genre origins.
