While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers—and brothers—Mario and Luigi are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a visual spectacle that faithfully and lovingly recreates the video game world in stunning 3D animation — the cinematography is genuinely exceptional, packed with game-accurate detail, vibrant color, and kinetic energy. The acting is serviceable, with Jack Black's Bowser being a genuine highlight. However, the plot is barebones and formulaic — a straightforward rescue quest with little emotional depth or narrative surprise. Novelty is low; despite the polish, it follows a well-worn hero's journey template and doesn't bring a distinctively fresh voice beyond fan service and nostalgia. The ending is satisfying enough for its family audience but unsurprising.
