The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Mick Haller is a charismatic defense attorney who does business out of his Lincoln Continental sedan. Mick spends most of his time defending petty crooks and other bottom-feeders, so it comes as quite a surprise when he lands the case of a lifetime: defending a Beverly Hills playboy who is accused of attempted murder. However, what Mick initially thinks is an open-and-shut case with a big monetary reward develops into something more sinister.

The Quartile Take

The Lincoln Lawyer is a solidly crafted legal thriller elevated primarily by Matthew McConaughey's charismatic, career-reviving performance as Mick Haller. The plot is competent and engaging with decent twists, though it follows fairly standard legal thriller conventions drawn from Michael Connelly's novel. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable — the Lincoln sedan gimmick is a neat visual motif but the overall look is pedestrian TV-movie-adjacent. Novelty is limited; the morally flexible defense attorney navigating a dangerous high-profile case is well-trodden genre territory, and while the execution is enjoyable, it doesn't distinguish itself conceptually. The ending resolves satisfyingly without being particularly memorable or surprising. Acting is the standout, with McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, and Ryan Phillippe all delivering strong work.
