Juliet, a beautiful doctor, has found the perfect New York apartment to start a new life after separating from her husband. It's got spacious rooms, a spectacular view, and a handy, handsome landlord. But there are secrets behind every wall and terror in every room as Juliet gets the unnerving feeling that she is not alone.
The Resident is a fairly by-the-numbers stalker/voyeur thriller that doesn't bring much new to the genre. The premise of a creepy landlord spying on a female tenant through hidden passages is well-worn territory, and the execution is predictable. The acting from Hilary Swank and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is serviceable but neither is given much to work with, and Christopher Lee's presence is largely wasted. Cinematography is competent with some effectively creepy visual moments in the apartment setting. The plot mechanics are formulaic and telegraphed early, removing most tension, and the ending resolves without much impact or surprise. Overall a middling genre entry that sits comfortably below average across most dimensions.
