The story of Steve, an Adélie penguin, on a quest to find a life partner and start a family. When Steve meets with Wuzzo the emperor penguin they become friends. But nothing comes easy in the icy Antarctic.
Penguins (2019) is a charming Disneynature documentary following Steve the Adélie penguin through breeding season in Antarctica. The cinematography is genuinely stunning, capturing intimate wildlife moments with remarkable clarity and patience — wide Antarctic vistas and close-up penguin behavior are both handled beautifully. The narrative structure is warmly accessible and gives the film emotional momentum, though the anthropomorphized storytelling (voiced by Ed Helms) is a familiar Disneynature formula that limits its novelty. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense — the narration is serviceable but leans heavily comedic in a way that occasionally undercuts the natural drama. The ending delivers satisfying resolution as Steve successfully raises a family, but follows the predictable arc of the genre. Overall a solid family nature film, distinguished mainly by its exceptional camerawork.
