Villains (2019)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

When their car breaks down, a couple on the run headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret, and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.

The Quartile Take

Villains is a quirky, darkly comic thriller that punches above its weight largely due to the committed performances of its four leads — Bill Skarsgård, Maika Monroe, Jeffrey Donovan, and Kyra Sedgwick are all clearly having a blast and elevate the material considerably. The premise is a fun role-reversal on the home-invasion genre, with the would-be burglars stumbling into something worse than themselves, giving it some genuine novelty of setup. However, the plot is fairly thin and struggles to sustain momentum across its runtime, relying heavily on the cast's chemistry rather than narrative ingenuity. The cinematography is functional but unremarkable, doing little to enhance the tension or dark comedy. The ending deflates somewhat, opting for a crowd-pleasing but tonally inconsistent resolution that undercuts the film's nastier edges.
