Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

Between two Thanksgivings, Hannah's husband falls in love with her sister Lee, while her hypochondriac ex-husband rekindles his relationship with her sister Holly.

The Quartile Take

Woody Allen's Oscar-winning ensemble piece is elevated chiefly by its exceptional cast — Michael Caine, Dianne Wiest, and Barbara Hershey all deliver career-highlight performances, with Wiest and Caine taking home Oscars. The interwoven storylines across two Thanksgivings give the film a warm, novelistic structure, though the plot itself is familiar Allen territory: neurotic New Yorkers navigating love, infidelity, and existential dread. Cinematography by Carlo Di Palma is handsome but not especially distinctive. The film's voice is recognizably Allensque rather than radically singular. The ending — optimistic and life-affirming — suits the material but isn't particularly surprising. A very fine film whose greatest strength is unambiguously its acting ensemble.
