King of Thieves (2018)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

London, England, April 2015. Brian Reader, a retired thief, gathers an unlikely gang of burglars to perpetrate the biggest and boldest heist in British history. The thieves assault the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company and escape with millions in goods and money. But soon the cracks between the gang members begin to appear when they discuss how to share the loot.

The Quartile Take

King of Thieves is a competent but unremarkable retelling of the 2015 Hatton Garden heist. The acting from a veteran British cast (Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Jim Broadbent) lifts the material above its formulaic crime drama trappings, but the script fails to fully exploit the inherent drama of aging criminals pulling off a record heist. The cinematography is functional but uninspired, and the film treads familiar heist-movie territory without offering a distinctive voice or fresh perspective on the true events. The ending, mirroring the real-life arrests and sentencing, lands without much emotional resonance or dramatic payoff.
