When an all-powerful Superintelligence chooses to study the most average person on Earth, Carol Peters, the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As the A.I. decides to enslave, save or destroy humanity, it’s up to Carol to prove that people are worth saving.
Superintelligence is a largely formulaic romantic comedy wrapped in a sci-fi premise that never fully commits to or explores its concept. The plot is predictable and underutilizes its intriguing A.I. hook, defaulting to generic rom-com beats. Melissa McCarthy's performance is serviceable but unremarkable, and the supporting cast including James Corden as the A.I. voice feels miscast. Visually the film is flat and TV-movie in quality with no distinctive cinematographic choices. The premise of an A.I. studying an average person had potential for genuine novelty but is squandered by safe, conventional storytelling. The ending resolves neatly and without surprise, offering little emotional or intellectual payoff.
