The story of the Battle of Midway, and the leaders and soldiers who used their instincts, fortitude and bravery to overcome massive odds.
Midway (2019) is a competent but formulaic war epic that covers the pivotal Pacific battle with enthusiasm but limited depth. The plot hits the expected beats of a based-on-true-story war film without much dramatic nuance, and the ensemble cast delivers workmanlike performances that rarely transcend the thin characterization. The CGI-heavy aerial combat sequences are visually ambitious but inconsistent in quality, leaning heavily on digital spectacle over tactile realism. As a retelling of a well-documented historical event, it offers little fresh perspective beyond a straightforward, patriotic chronicle. The ending honors the historical outcome respectably with tributes to the fallen, but it feels earned by history rather than by the film's own storytelling craft.
