Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Area 51, flying saucers from another world - and the program to create a fierce technology. Bob Lazar remains the singular most famous and controversial name in the world of UFOs. The reason you know about Area 51 is because Lazar came forward and told you about it. His disclosures have turned his life upside-down and he has tried to stay out of the spotlight. For this reason, he has never let any filmmaker into the private world of his daily life - that is - until now. Corbell’s film explores Lazar’s claims through the lens of thirty years - providing rare and never before revealed footage - guaranteed to alter the landscape of the debate.

The Quartile Take

Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers benefits from unprecedented access to its reclusive subject and rare archival footage, giving it genuine documentary value within the UFO genre. The film's structure is engaging enough, leaning heavily on Lazar's personal narrative and the mystique surrounding his claims. However, the filmmaking itself is fairly conventional for the talking-head documentary format, and Corbell's approach veers into advocacy rather than rigorous journalism, limiting its credibility and depth. The ending trails off without resolution, which is somewhat inherent to the subject matter but still unsatisfying. Novelty is moderate — Lazar is a singular figure and the access is new, but the UFO conspiracy documentary format is well-worn territory.
