The Bouncer (2018)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A tough nightclub bouncer struggling to raise his 8-year-old daughter is forced to go undercover after an unfortunate event.

The Quartile Take

The Bouncer is a fairly formulaic Euro-action thriller built around Jean-Claude Van Damme in a late-career role. The plot follows well-worn undercover/parental-bond territory without significant twists, and the father-daughter emotional thread feels underdeveloped. Van Damme delivers a restrained, physical performance that is the film's strongest asset, leaning into minimalist stoicism. Cinematography is competent Brussels noir but unremarkable. Novelty is low — the undercover bouncer premise is derivative and the execution doesn't distinguish itself meaningfully. The ending resolves predictably without particular impact.
