James, a college freshman and computer genius, is enlisted by his womanizing roommate, Lance, to code the ultimate hook-up app. But when James discovers that his divorced mother is using the app, unexpected consequences ensue.
Swiped is a formulaic, by-the-numbers comedy-drama that offers little beyond its basic premise. The plot follows predictable beats around a college hookup app with thin character development and recycled romantic comedy tropes. Acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with performances that rarely elevate the weak material. Cinematography is generic and TV-movie level, with no distinctive visual choices. The concept of satirizing dating app culture had some potential novelty but the execution is derivative and lacks a unique voice. The ending resolves conflicts in the most expected way possible, offering no surprises or emotional payoff. Overall a mediocre effort that fails to capitalize on its premise.
