Mickey Mouse, piloting a steamboat, delights his passenger, Minnie Mouse, by making musical instruments out of the menagerie on deck.
Steamboat Willie is one of the most historically significant short films ever made — the first cartoon with synchronized sound, introducing Mickey Mouse to the world. Its novelty is unmatched in animation history. The synchronized musical gags (animals as instruments) are inventive and charming, elevating cinematography/presentation for its era. However, the plot is essentially a loose gag reel with minimal narrative structure, and there is no real ending to speak of — just a punchline cut. Acting in animation terms is rudimentary, reflecting the very earliest days of the form. Its place in history is towering, but judged on craft categories individually, it is a product of its experimental moment.
