One for the Money (2012)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

An unemployed lingerie buyer convinces her bail bondsman cousin to give her a shot as a bounty hunter. Her first assignment is to track down a former cop on the run for murder – the same man who broke her heart years before. With the help of some friends and the best bounty hunter in the business, she slowly learns what it takes to be a true bounty hunter.

The Quartile Take

One for the Money is a fairly generic romantic action-comedy adaptation of Janet Evanovich's novel. The plot is formulaic—bumbling amateur bounty hunter chases ex-flame—with little tension or surprise. Katherine Heigl's performance feels one-note and the supporting cast is underutilized. Cinematography is bland and TV-movie in quality, nothing distinctive visually. Novelty is low; the premise of a woman entering a male-dominated field with comedic mishaps was already well-trodden, and the execution adds nothing fresh. The ending resolves predictably without earned emotional payoff. Across the board, this is a below-average-to-average effort in every dimension.
