The Ladykillers (2004)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

An eccentric, if not charming Southern professor and his crew pose as a band in order to rob a casino, all under the nose of his unsuspecting landlord – a sharp old woman.

The Quartile Take

The Coen Brothers' remake of the 1955 British classic struggles to justify its existence. While the cast — particularly Tom Hanks in an oddball performance — brings energy, the plot feels padded and the Southern Gothic setting, though colorful, can't disguise a derivative foundation. The Coens inject their trademark quirk and gospel music, giving it some visual personality, but it lacks the tightness and wit of their best work. The ending retains a darkly comic charm but the journey there is uneven. A curiosity rather than a standout entry in their filmography.
