The untold and ultimately inspiring story of legendary singer, Teddy Pendergrass, the man poised to be the biggest R&B artist of all time until the tragic accident that changed his life forever at the age of only 31.
A solid music documentary covering the rise and near-fall of Teddy Pendergrass, whose story is genuinely compelling and underrepresented in pop culture. The narrative arc from hardscrabble beginnings through Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes stardom to his solo peak and the devastating 1982 accident is well-structured and emotionally resonant. However, the documentary follows fairly conventional talking-heads-and-archival-footage format with workmanlike cinematography that doesn't distinguish itself visually. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense — interviewee presence is decent but unremarkable. Novelty is moderate: Pendergrass himself is a singular, undersung figure, giving the film some distinctiveness, but the documentary grammar is standard issue. The ending, addressing his later life and legacy, provides emotional closure without being particularly surprising or innovative.
