The Quartile Take

David Lowery's The Green Knight is a singular, haunting reimagining of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight poem. Its plot is dense with mythic symbolism and operates more as a meditation on cowardice, honor, and mortality than a conventional adventure, earning a high mark for ambition and thematic richness. The cinematography by Andrew Droz Palermo is stunning — painterly compositions, extraordinary use of natural light, and a pervasive atmosphere of dread and wonder that is genuinely exceptional. Novelty is very high: this is a completely distinctive artifact, unlike any other Arthurian or fantasy film, with its elliptical structure, surreal interludes, and philosophical tone. Acting is solid — Dev Patel carries the film with a convincing arc of vulnerability — but the supporting cast, while atmospheric, rarely transcends. The ending (with its famous 'vision' sequence) is brave and provocative but deliberately withholding in a way that divides rather than resonates fully, earning a slightly lower mark.
