Fueled by memories of her mother, resourceful Fei Fei builds a rocket to the moon on a mission to prove the existence of a legendary moon goddess.
Over the Moon is a visually stunning Netflix animated musical with genuinely breathtaking sequences on the moon, where the art direction and color palette are exceptionally inventive and vibrant. The plot, however, leans heavily on familiar grief-and-acceptance arcs seen in films like Coco, with a somewhat predictable emotional journey. Voice performances are solid and expressive without being exceptional. The ending feels rushed and emotionally manipulative rather than earned, undercutting the film's more imaginative first two acts. Novelty is moderate — the Chinese mythological setting and cultural specificity are refreshing, but the broader narrative framework follows well-worn animated family film conventions.
