Arkansas (2020)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Kyle and Swin live by the orders of an Arkansas-based drug kingpin named Frog, whom they've never met. But when a deal goes horribly wrong, the consequences are deadly.

The Quartile Take

Arkansas is a modest Southern crime thriller adapted from John Brandon's novel, following the familiar trajectory of low-level drug runners entangled with an unseen kingpin. The ensemble cast (Liam Hemsworth, Clark Duke, Vince Vaughn) delivers competent but uneven performances, with Vaughn's Frog being the standout. The cinematography captures the rural Arkansas atmosphere adequately without distinguishing itself. The narrative structure, intercutting Frog's origin story with the present-day plot, is an interesting choice but the execution is uneven. The ending feels abrupt and unsatisfying, failing to deliver a meaningful payoff to the tension built up. Overall it treads well-worn Southern noir territory without carving out a sufficiently distinctive identity.
