Make Us Dream (2018)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Steven Gerrard became perhaps the greatest player in the history of Liverpool FC, but did so when success and trophies were declining. It became his personal mission to lift the famous club back to the top. That loyalty raised him to God-like status with Liverpool fans, but was an unbearable burden, bringing with it a profound sense of responsibility to live up to their and his own expectations.

The Quartile Take

Make Us Dream is a well-crafted sports documentary that benefits from intimate access to Steven Gerrard and rich archival footage. It handles the emotional weight of his career — the trophies won, the slip, the near-misses — with genuine sensitivity. However, it follows a fairly conventional biographical documentary structure, and while the subject matter is compelling, it doesn't reinvent the form. Cinematography is competent and emotive without being visually adventurous. The ending, tied to his retirement, is bittersweet but predictable. A solid, moving tribute that will resonate deeply with Liverpool fans but sits comfortably within the sports-doc genre.
