Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating
Three high school seniors throw a party to make a name for themselves. As the night progresses, things spiral out of control as word of the party spreads.
Project X is a found-footage party film that delivers on its core premise of escalating chaos but offers little in terms of story depth or character development. The plot is essentially a one-note escalation with thin characterization. Acting from the largely unknown cast is serviceable but unpolished, fitting the mockumentary style. The found-footage/faux-documentary approach applied to a teen party gives it a distinctive kinetic energy and some visual novelty for the genre at the time. The ending fizzles without meaningful consequence or resolution, undercutting the mayhem that preceded it.
