Captain Jack Sparrow works his way out of a blood debt with the ghostly Davy Jones to avoid eternal damnation.
Dead Man's Chest is a visually spectacular blockbuster sequel that expands the world of the first film with impressive practical and digital effects — the Kraken, Davy Jones's crew, and the Flying Dutchman remain visually stunning benchmarks. Cinematography earns a strong mark for its lush, inventive production design and memorable set pieces (the waterwheel sword fight, the cannibal island). However, the plot is notably convoluted and bloated, serving more as a bridge to the third film than a satisfying standalone story. Acting is solid — Depp is again charismatic, and Bill Nighy's motion-captured Davy Jones is a highlight — but the ensemble doesn't elevate beyond serviceable. Novelty is moderate; it builds on an established formula and feels less fresh than the original. The ending, while deliberately a cliffhanger with Barbossa's return, is more of a setup than a resolution.
