Ashfall (2019)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A group of unlikely heroes from across the Korean peninsula try to save the day after a volcano erupts on the mythical and majestic Baekdu Mountain.

The Quartile Take

Ashfall is a competent Korean disaster-action blockbuster that blends volcanic catastrophe with inter-Korean political tension, giving it a distinctive regional flavor. The plot is serviceable with entertaining set pieces but relies on familiar disaster-movie tropes and convenient coincidences. Acting is solid from a strong ensemble cast including Ha Jung-woo and Lee Byung-hun, though characterization is fairly thin. Cinematography delivers impressive large-scale disaster sequences with capable blockbuster craft. The inter-Korean cooperation angle adds some novelty to an otherwise formulaic genre piece. The ending, however, leans heavily into melodramatic sacrifice clichés that feel telegraphed well in advance, undercutting emotional impact.
