After barely surviving a brutal attack by a sadistic serial killer, crime boss Jang Dong-su is left humiliated. Determined to catch the killer known as K, he forms an uneasy alliance with Jung Tae-seok, a relentless and incorruptible detective who often disrupts his illegal business. However, while Jang Dong-su wants K dead, Jung Tae-suk is determined to bring him to justice. With a deal in place—whoever finds K first will decide his fate—the hunt begins, blurring the lines between crime and law.
The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil is a slick, well-executed Korean action-thriller that benefits enormously from Ma Dong-seok's commanding screen presence as crime boss Jang Dong-su. The central premise of a gangster-cop uneasy alliance hunting a serial killer is inherently compelling but not entirely fresh — it echoes buddy-cop and crime genre conventions while executing them with considerable polish. Ma Dong-seok's physical charisma and performance elevate the material well above average, while the supporting cast holds its own. Cinematography is competent and stylish without being especially distinctive. The serial killer subplot is somewhat underdeveloped, and the resolution — while satisfying on an action level — feels relatively conventional for the genre. It's a crowd-pleasing genre entry that fires on most cylinders without reinventing the wheel.
