Galifianakis dreamed of becoming a star. But when Will Ferrell discovered his public access TV show, 'Between Two Ferns' and uploaded it to Funny or Die, Zach became a viral laughing stock. Now Zach and his crew are taking a road trip to complete a series of high-profile celebrity interviews and restore his reputation.
Between Two Ferns: The Movie stretches a beloved digital short format into feature length with mixed results. The plot is a thin road-trip framing device that exists mainly to string together celebrity interview segments — functional but unremarkable. Acting is serviceable; Galifianakis commits fully to his awkward persona and the celebrity cameos range from game to genuinely funny. Cinematography is deliberately lo-fi and pedestrian, fitting the aesthetic but offering nothing visually interesting. Novelty gets a modest boost for being a rare successful translation of a web format to film, though the conceit is already well-established from the original series. The ending is predictable and wraps up with little surprise or emotional payoff.
