Palm Springs (2020)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 2 ratings

When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.

The Quartile Take

Palm Springs takes the well-worn time-loop premise and injects it with genuine wit and existential melancholy, earning a decent Novelty score for its fresh double-protagonist angle and nihilistic humor — though it still lives clearly in Groundhog Day's shadow. The plot is breezy and well-constructed for the genre, keeping momentum without overstaying its welcome. Acting from Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti is charming and naturalistic, carrying the emotional weight effectively if not transcendently. Cinematography is functional and sun-drenched but unremarkable — the Palm Springs setting is pretty but not visually exploited with any particular artistry. The ending resolves satisfyingly on an emotional level though the quantum-physics escape hatch feels a bit convenient. A solid, above-average romantic comedy that earns its reputation without breaking the ceiling in any single category.
