When a prisoner transfer van is attacked, the cop in charge must fight those inside and outside while dealing with a silent foe: the icy temperatures.

The Quartile Take

Below Zero is a solid Spanish thriller that competently executes its contained, high-pressure premise — a siege on a prison transport van in freezing conditions. The plot is functional and keeps tension reasonably high, though it relies on familiar genre mechanics: corrupt cops, revenge-driven antagonists, and a lone-wolf protagonist. The acting is credible without being remarkable, with lead Karra Elejalde doing solid work. Cinematography captures the cold isolation effectively but doesn't push beyond serviceable genre craft. The concept of combining a siege thriller with extreme cold as a secondary threat has modest novelty, but the execution follows well-worn action-thriller conventions closely. The ending feels somewhat abrupt and unsatisfying, leaning into bleakness without fully earning its emotional weight, leaving the resolution feeling undercooked.
