Despite Everything (2019)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Sara, Lucía, Sofía and Claudia are sisters, 4 modern women with very different personalities, who come together at their mother's funeral, after which they discover the man they've all called "dad" throughout their lives is not really their father. They embark on a quest to discover who their real fathers are, discovering more about themselves, their mother, and their lives.

The Quartile Take

Despite Everything is a competent Spanish comedy-drama that leans on a fairly familiar premise — estranged siblings reuniting after a parent's death and uncovering a family secret. The four-sisters dynamic and the DNA-hunt storyline are engaging enough but tread well-worn ground. Acting is solid across the board without being exceptional, and the visual style is functional rather than distinctive. The ending provides adequate emotional resolution but doesn't surprise. Overall a watchable, crowd-pleasing comedy with modest ambitions, landing close to its middling reputation.
