The Quartile Take

Hana-bi is one of Kitano's most celebrated works, blending contemplative silence with sudden violence in a uniquely personal way. The non-linear narrative, integrated artwork sequences, and the tender tragedy of the wife's illness create something truly singular. Cinematography by Yanagijima is austere and painterly. Acting, particularly Kitano himself in near-wordless performance, is exceptional. The ending, while poignant and thematically resonant, is relatively foreseeable given the film's elegiac tone — it's the one category that lands firmly rather than transcending expectations.
