Cold Blood (2019)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

A legendary but retired hit man lives in peace and isolation in the barren North American wilderness. When he rescues a woman from a snowmobiling accident, he soon discovers that she's harboring a secret that forces him to return to his lethal ways.

The Quartile Take

Cold Blood is a slow-burn thriller that leans heavily on familiar hitman-in-retirement tropes without offering much that feels fresh or distinctive. The Washington wilderness setting provides some atmospheric cinematography, but the pacing is sluggish and the plot twists feel telegraphed rather than earned. Jean Reno brings a stoic gravitas to his role but is underserved by thin character writing, while Sônia Braga is similarly wasted. The ending attempts a noir-ish revelation but lands with more confusion than impact, undermining whatever tension had been built. Overall a serviceable but forgettable genre exercise.
