Three young women vacationing in Paris find themselves whisked away to Monte Carlo after one of the girls is mistaken for a British heiress.
Monte Carlo is a light, formulaic romantic comedy built on a well-worn mistaken-identity premise with little narrative surprise. The young cast (Selena Gomez, Leighton Meester, Katie Cassidy) delivers charming and competent performances that elevate the predictable material. Visually, the Parisian and Monegasque locations add some gloss and polish but the cinematography is functional rather than distinguished. The concept is derivative — the look-alike/mistaken heiress trope is extremely well-trodden — and the film doesn't bring a distinctive voice or fresh spin to it. The ending wraps things up in a thoroughly predictable, tidy bow with no surprises, typical of the genre.
