Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Dorothy wakes in post-tornado Kansas, only to be whisked back to Oz to try to save her old friends, the Scarecrow, the Lion, the Tin Man, and Glinda, from a devious new villain, the Jester. New comrades Wiser the Owl, Marshal Mallow, China Princess, and Tugg the Tugboat join Dorothy on her latest magical journey through the colorful landscape of Oz to restore order and happiness to Emerald City.

The Quartile Take

Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return is a largely forgettable direct-to-video-quality animated sequel that fails to capture the magic of its source material. The plot is thin and formulaic, recycling the 'return to Oz' premise without meaningful innovation—Dorothy assembles new companions and defeats a cartoonish villain with little dramatic tension. The voice acting is passable but unremarkable, with even its notable cast (Lea Michele, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi) delivering flat performances. The animation, while colorful, is noticeably below the standard of major studio releases of the era, lacking visual polish or memorable cinematography. As a sequel to a beloved classic, it offers almost nothing distinctive—the new characters (a tugboat, an owl, a marshmallow man) feel manufactured rather than imaginative. The ending resolves predictably and without emotional payoff. Across the board, the film sits squarely in below-average territory for its genre and ambition.
