Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure (2011)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

After a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, Sharpay Evans sets off for the bright lights of NYC, convinced instant fame and fortune are in the bag. But theatre's a dog-eat-dog world. Fortunately, Sharpay also meets Peyton, a handsome student filmmaker who finds Sharpay nearly as fascinating as she finds herself.

The Quartile Take

A made-for-TV spin-off of High School Musical focused on its breakout villain character, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure is serviceable but thin. The plot follows predictable fish-out-of-water and underdog-finds-success beats with little surprise. Ashley Tisdale is charming enough in the lead role but the supporting cast is unremarkable. Cinematography is standard Disney Channel TV-movie fare with no visual ambition. As a spin-off it recycles the established Sharpay persona without meaningfully expanding it, making it feel derivative of the original franchise. The ending wraps up neatly and predictably. Overall it's a passable piece of family entertainment that delivers exactly what fans of the character expect, but nothing more.
