Tells the life story of Danish author Karen Blixen, who at the beginning of the 20th century moved to Africa to build a new life for herself. The film is based on her 1937 autobiographical novel.
Out of Africa is a handsomely mounted prestige epic with standout performances from Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and David Watkin's cinematography of the Kenyan landscape is genuinely breathtaking — earning its Oscar. The acting is a clear strength, with Streep delivering a nuanced, internally complex portrayal of Blixen. However, the plot unfolds at a stately, sometimes meandering pace that prioritizes atmosphere over dramatic tension, and the romantic narrative follows fairly familiar colonial-era melodrama beats. The ending is emotionally resonant but not surprising given the elegiac tone established throughout. Novelty is solid but not exceptional — it perfects a certain kind of lush literary adaptation without being particularly singular in conception.
