After a police chase with an otherworldly being, a New York City cop is recruited as an agent in a top-secret organization established to monitor and police alien activity on Earth: the Men in Black. Agent K and new recruit Agent J find themselves in the middle of a deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies.
Men in Black is a polished, crowd-pleasing sci-fi buddy-cop comedy elevated primarily by the electric chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. The plot is functional but fairly straightforward — alien terrorist, ticking clock, save the world — without much depth or surprise. The cinematography by Don Peterman is slick and serviceable but not visually distinctive beyond the production design. Novelty is moderate: the comic-book premise of a secret alien-policing agency was fresh in execution and tone for mainstream audiences, but the buddy-cop formula underneath is well-worn. The ending resolves cleanly but relies on a somewhat rushed climactic set piece. Where the film genuinely excels is in its performances — Smith's charisma and Jones's deadpan stoicism create one of the most memorable comedic duos of the decade, earning a well-above-average acting score.
