1BR (2019)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

When Sarah lucks into a sweet one-bedroom at Asilo Del Mar Apartments in Los Angeles, she thinks she's hit the jackpot. It's got plenty of space, friendly tenants, group BBQs and even a cute neighbour next door. All is not what it seems: loud noises start keeping her awake at night; her cat is missing; everyone seems to be a little too helpful and friendly, except for the weirdo, Lester. Soon, Sarah learns she didn't choose this apartment — it chose her.

The Quartile Take

1BR is a competent and moderately effective cult-horror thriller that builds tension reasonably well in its first half before losing steam. The apartment cult setup is familiar territory but executed with enough commitment to feel above average in plot construction. Acting is serviceable across the board — Sarah's journey is believable if not revelatory. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, failing to leverage the claustrophobic apartment setting as effectively as it could. The film earns modest novelty points for its specific social commentary on community and belonging as tools of manipulation, though the cult-horror subgenre has been well-trodden. The ending disappoints, leaning into a bleak conclusion that feels more nihilistic than earned, undercutting the character work that preceded it.
