A young boy is born as the reincarnation of a demonic power, into a society that hates and fears him. Destined by prophecy to bring destruction to the world, Nezha must choose between good and evil to see if he can change his fate.
Ne Zha is a landmark in Chinese animation, delivering a genuinely fresh and emotionally resonant take on the classic myth. Its plot subverts the expected hero's journey with real thematic weight around fate, prejudice, and identity, earning a strong score. The cinematography and visual spectacle are extraordinary for donghua — fluid action sequences, inventive character design, and vivid world-building push it to the top tier. Novelty is high because this film has a singular voice that blends irreverent humor with dark fantasy in a way that feels distinctly Chinese yet globally compelling, representing a new peak for the medium. Voice acting is competent and emotionally effective but not a particular standout. The ending, while emotionally satisfying and spectacular in execution, leans somewhat into familiar sacrificial-hero conventions and feels slightly rushed in its resolution, preventing a top score there.
