Hubie Dubois, despite his devotion to his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts (and its legendary Halloween celebration), is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike. But this year, something really is going bump in the night, and it’s up to Hubie to save Halloween.
Hubie Halloween is a standard Adam Sandler Netflix comedy that delivers exactly what fans of his goofier output expect: broad slapstick, a lovable underdog protagonist, and a thin mystery plot. The Salem Halloween setting adds a little atmosphere but the story is formulaic and predictable. Acting is serviceable from Sandler and his usual ensemble of friends, though performances are broad by design. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable, typical of mid-budget Netflix productions. Novelty is low — it follows the well-worn Sandler template with little to distinguish it from his other holiday comedies. The ending wraps things up neatly and harmlessly but offers no real surprises. It's an inoffensive, mediocre crowd-pleaser that sits firmly at average across the board.
