A highly intelligent chimpanzee named Caesar has been living a peaceful suburban life ever since he was born. But when he gets taken to a cruel primate facility, Caesar decides to revolt against those who have harmed him.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a solid reboot that earns its reputation through emotional engagement and a surprisingly poignant origin story. The plot is functional but formulaic in its first half — the mad-science tropes and human antagonists are broadly drawn. Acting is competent, with Andy Serkis delivering a genuinely expressive motion-capture performance as Caesar, elevating the film above its script. Cinematography is serviceable blockbuster work, nothing distinctive. Novelty is moderate — the film smartly refocuses the franchise on Caesar's perspective and emotional journey rather than societal allegory, which feels fresh, but it still hits familiar beats. The ending is the film's standout: the ape revolt and Golden Gate Bridge sequence is thrillingly staged and emotionally satisfying, with the post-credits viral spread adding chilling resonance.
