After losing their university jobs, three parapsychologists start a ghost-catching business in New York City and uncover a supernatural threat that could destroy the world.
Ghostbusters is a genuinely singular comedy-horror hybrid that defined its own genre. The performances — especially Bill Murray's deadpan Venkman — are exceptional and carry enormous charm. The concept and execution are highly distinctive, blending workplace comedy, special effects spectacle, and supernatural horror in a way no film had quite done before or has matched since. The plot is functional but fairly thin, serving primarily as scaffolding for character moments and set pieces. The ending is entertaining but leans heavily on spectacle (the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man) over dramatic resolution. Cinematography is competent and atmospheric but not a standout craft achievement.
