Jexi (2019)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Phil's new phone comes with an unexpected feature, Jexi...an A.I. determined to keep him all to herself in a comedy about what can happen when you love your phone more than all else.

The Quartile Take

Jexi is a broadly comedic take on smartphone addiction and AI dependency that never rises above its formulaic premise. The plot is predictable rom-com territory with the AI-as-jealous-partner gimmick wearing thin quickly. Acting is serviceable with Adam DeVine doing his usual shtick and Rose Byrne providing decent voice work. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable for a mid-budget comedy. Novelty is low — the concept of an overbearing AI has been explored more cleverly elsewhere, and the execution is by-the-numbers. The ending wraps up exactly as expected with little earned emotional payoff.
