Secret Society of Second-Born Royals (2020)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Sam is a teenage royal rebel, second in line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria. Just as her disinterest in the royal way of life is at an all-time high, she discovers she has super-human abilities and is invited to join a secret society of similar extraordinary second-born royals charged with keeping the world safe.

The Quartile Take

Secret Society of Second-Born Royals is a fairly by-the-numbers Disney+ superhero-meets-royalty YA adventure that blends familiar tropes from both genres without distinguishing itself in any meaningful way. The plot is predictable and formulaic, combining teen rebellion, secret training academies, and coming-of-age arcs we've seen many times before. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with a young cast doing competent work within a script that doesn't give them much to work with. Cinematography is flat and functional, typical of mid-tier streaming productions without any standout visual moments. Novelty is low — the concept of second-born royals with superpowers sounds intriguing on paper but is executed in a very derivative fashion, borrowing heavily from superhero team-up and royal YA conventions. The ending resolves neatly and predictably, setting up sequels that never materialized, leaving it feeling incomplete.
