Monsters University (2013)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at Monsters University — when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

The Quartile Take

Monsters University is a competent and charming Pixar prequel that explores Mike and Sulley's origin story with warmth and humor. The plot follows a familiar college underdog formula — the scare games arc is enjoyable but predictable. Voice acting is solid throughout with Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprising their roles naturally. The animation is polished as expected from Pixar, though it doesn't push any visual boundaries in the way earlier Pixar films did. Novelty is the weakest dimension: it's a by-the-numbers college comedy template applied to the Monsters world, leaning heavily on well-worn tropes like the ragtag fraternity and rivalry arcs. Where the film genuinely excels is its ending — rather than a tidy triumph, Mike and Sulley are expelled and must work their way up from the bottom of Monsters Inc., which is a surprisingly honest and emotionally resonant subversion of the expected feel-good climax, earning genuine praise for narrative courage.
