Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

An imaginary world comes to life in a holiday tale of an eccentric toymaker, his adventurous granddaughter, and a magical invention that has the power to change their lives forever.

The Quartile Take

Jingle Jangle is a visually sumptuous, genuinely original holiday musical that stands apart from the crowded Christmas film landscape. Its steampunk-infused aesthetic, vibrant Afrocentric design sensibility, and inventive production design earn it a well-above-average Cinematography score. The film's conception — a Black-led, Broadway-style Christmas fantasy with original songs and a toymaker mythology — is distinctive enough to warrant high Novelty. Forest Whitaker commits fully and brings warmth to the eccentric inventor role, though the ensemble performances are solid rather than exceptional. The plot is serviceable holiday fare with familiar redemption and legacy themes, landing squarely above average but not groundbreaking. The ending resolves everything neatly and emotionally but leans into predictable uplift without much surprise.
