Tired of the small-time grind, three Marseille cops get a chance to bust a major drug network. But lines blur when a key informant makes a big ask.
The Stronghold is a gritty, competent French crime thriller set in the volatile drug-riddled housing projects of Marseille, benefiting from strong ensemble performances and authentic atmosphere. The plot follows familiar corrupt-cop-and-informant territory without reinventing the wheel, and while it has genuine tension and local color, it doesn't distinguish itself strongly from other European crime dramas. The cinematography captures Marseille's urban texture well but stays functional rather than visually striking. The ending is suitably bleak and morally ambiguous, fitting the tone. Novelty is the weakest point as the narrative beats are largely predictable for the genre.
