The Quartile Take

Spirit Untamed is a loose spin-off/reboot of the beloved 2002 DreamWorks film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, but largely fails to recapture what made the original special. The plot is formulaic and predictable, following a fairly standard adventure template without meaningful subversion or depth. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with voice performances that rarely elevate the material. The 3D animation is competent and visually decent, especially in the horse movement sequences, but lacks the painterly grandeur and emotional sweep of the original's hand-drawn aesthetic. Novelty is low — it retreads familiar ground from the original film without adding a distinctive new voice or vision, functioning more as a diluted retread than a genuine reimagining. The ending resolves things neatly but without much emotional payoff or surprise, feeling rushed and unearned compared to the journey that preceded it.
